Cummings Receives Distinguished Service Award

Health Center designed to serve under-privileged population to present Cummings with honor.

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) will receive the Distinguished Service Award from Total Health Care tonight, Friday, October 2, 2009 at 8 p.m., at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore.

The award will be presented as part of a gala put on by Total Health Care to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the company.

Cummings said he was proud to receive the award from a company dedicated to public service. “In Baltimore and other communities across America, 1200 community health centers are advancing one of the most important human rights initiatives of our time,” Cummings said. “They provide health care to 18 million uninsured and under-insured Americans, including millions of children. They work to eliminate the unacceptable and immoral conditions in our health care system that have made being Black or poor important factors in our mortality statistics.”

Cummings will speak, following the award, regarding the moral imperative of healthcare.

Total Health Care, Inc. operates eight health care facilities throughout Baltimore and is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) funded in part by Local, State and Government agencies. Federally Qualified Health Centers served more than 215,000 patients in 2007 - many of whom would otherwise have been denied care.
