Stupak Statement on House Republican Energy Proposals

WASHINGTON – Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) today made the following statement in response to reports on energy legislation that House Republicans could move as early as next week:

“The Republican pattern on energy continues: when in doubt, propose drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and attacking our environment.  Less than four months ago, the President noted that America is addicted to oil.  You won’t cure America’s oil addiction with more drilling.”

“Rather than focusing on legislative proposals Democrats and Republicans can agree upon, the House Republicans are poised to put together another divisive package that will not be able to pass the House and Senate.  As a result, nothing will be done to ease the pain consumers feel at the pump.”

“If Speaker Hastert truly wants to address gas price gouging, he should bring up the FREE Act, H.R. 3936, for a vote in the House tomorrow.  Instead, it is business as usual in the Republican controlled Congress and consumers are paying the price at the pump.”
