WASHINGTON – After several reported cases of internet and phone scams occurring among consumers in northern Michigan, Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) advises his constituents not to give out social security information, bank account numbers or other sensitive personal information that might be used in identity theft.
“With the holiday season upon us, ‘tis the season for giving – however, many fraudulent groups use the season as an opportunity to take advantage of kind, generous people,” Stupak said. “Whether a group calls soliciting a donation or claims to be providing advice about an unclaimed benefit or the new Medicare plan, consumers can never be too careful. Be sure to check the legitimacy of a group and the security of your online or phone connection before providing any personal or financial information.”
In recent weeks, instances of scams and bad business practices have occurred in northern Michigan. Constituents receiving calls from organizations requesting personal or financial information should verify the authenticity of the request or check if complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau by visiting www.bbb.org.
