WASHINGTON – The U.S. House passed a resolution today (H. Res. 56) establishing February 2 through February 6, 2009, as National School Counseling Week. Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers introduced the bi-partisan resolution with Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA).
“School counselors serve as a vital resource for parents by helping them focus on ways to further the educational, personal and social growth of their children. They work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves,” said Congressman Ehlers. “School counseling programs are an integral part of the educational process which enables all students to achieve.”
National School Counseling Week will highlight the importance of counselors in West Michigan and across the nation.
“School counselors provide a unique contribution by helping students not only reach their academic potential, but also realize personal, social and career growth,” said the resolution’s sponsor, Rep. Linda Sánchez. “I hope to see National School Counseling Week recognized in my home state of California and across the country as we take the time to thank and honor the valuable work of school counselors.”
National School Counseling Week is celebrated each year during the first full week of February. This year’s theme is, “School Counselors: Making a Difference.”
