Kildee Helps Secure $250,000 for

Saginaw Museum of Art

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI) announced today that the Saginaw Art Museum received $250,000 in the Omnibus Appropriations Bill to build a new regional education wing.  Kildee worked closely with Senators Levin and Stabenow to secure $250,000 in the final Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary Appropriations conference report.

“The Saginaw Art Museum will be able to use these funds to improve the quality and expand the accessibility of visual arts to the entire community,” said Kildee.  “This funding will create a state-of-the-art museum that will help establish the Saginaw Art Museum as a leader in world of visual arts.  The Saginaw Art Museum will also continue to contribute to the surrounding community by increasing awareness, understanding and appreciation of the visual arts.”

“An appreciation for art and the development of self-expression through art are important positive skills that need to be developed in all our youth,” Senator Stabenow said. “This funding will enable the Saginaw Art Museum to build on its history of success in fostering art understanding and expression in Saginaw, Bay and Tuscola counties.”

"The Saginaw Art Museum plays a vital role in providing educational and outreach programs for disadvantaged youth in the community," Senator Levin said.  "With this funding, the museum will be able to further expand programs such as Art Action Team and ArtSmart, which are designed to build healthy self-expression in at-risk youth."

The Saginaw Art Museum will use the $250,000 to create a hands-on gallery with interactive, science-based activities, two studio classrooms, a multipurpose lecture theatre, a student orientation hall and photo lab.  The new education wing is a part of the Saginaw Art Museum’s comprehensive expansion project, which is designed to enhance and increase the appreciation of the visual arts for everyone in the Saginaw area.  The Saginaw Art Museum is also one of the only providers of visual arts education to schools in underserved communities where art experiences are limited due to lack of district funding, teachers and tools.
