The Department of Labor released the jobs numbers for June. The national unemployment rate now stands at 9.5%. The numbers behind this figure are very concerning and point to the difficulty of this recession and recovery. 467,000 additional jobs were lost in June. The long-term unemployed, or individuals unemployed for longer than 6 month, has tripled since the start of the recession and now stands at 4.4 million. The estimate is that there are 5 people looking for work for every job available.
Michigan is ground zero for these national numbers and they spotlight the need for the Michigan State Senate to stop blocking $138 million in federal money from reaching unemployed workers in Michigan. And even as the federal government has approved the longest extension of unemployment benefits in history, we must prepare to act in the face of hundreds of thousands of individuals exhausting benefits these next months. |
