  • Attended event with Secretary LaHood and other Members of Congress to kick-off of Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) program.
  • Attended White House Ceremony honoring the WNBA Champion Detroit Shock.   
  • Met with Trade Subcommittee Staff to review the week’s trade agenda and pending trade issues. 
  • Attended Meeting of the Democratic Members of the House to discuss H.R. 3200- America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.

  • Met with Ford Motor Company to discuss deficiencies in the Korea Free Trade Agreement
    Attended Meeting of the Democratic Members of the House. 
  • Phone call with Director of White House Office of Management and Budget to discuss health care reform. 
  • Hosted telephone town hall meeting on health care reform with local residents.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

  • The U.S. House met at 10:00 a.m. for legislative business. 
  • Voted throughout the day on legislation, including a bill to provide money to the Federal Unemployment Trust Fund for states that have run out of funds  to pay their unemployment benefits.  Money will be paid back when the state balances recover. 
  • Attended Meeting with Ways and Means Democrats to discuss health care reform legislation.
  • Met with Trade Subcommittee Staff to discuss climate change legislation and other outstanding trade issues. 

Thursday, July 30, 2009

  • The U.S. House met at 10:00 a.m. for legislative business.  Debated and voted on H.R. 3326- Department of Defense Appropriations Act and H.R. 2749- Food Safety Enhancement Act which gives the FDA new authority to prevent outbreaks of food-borne illness. 
  • Attended Meeting with Ways and Means Democrats to discuss health care reform legislation
  • Hosted briefing for Colleagues and trade staff on worker rights in Central America since the passage of Central America Free Trade Agreement.  I opposed this FTA in part because of its weak worker rights provisions.
  • Met with Chair of Morgan Stanley's Asia Division to discuss currency imbalances with China and their impact on U.S. economic conditions. 
  • Met with Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the U.S. to discuss trade issues. 
  • Met with Colleagues from New Democrat Coalition to discuss trade issues.
  • Attended Classified Briefing with Administration Officials on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
  • Spoke with Secretary Ray LaHood regarding Cash for Clunkers Program
    Conference Call with Michigan Delegation to discuss Cash for Clunkers Program. 

Friday, July 31, 2009

  • Met with Michigan Delegation and Administration officials to discuss strategy for adding $2 billion to Cash for Clunkers program after news that in less than a week enough cars may have been sold to utilize the first $1 billion in rebates.
  • Attended Meeting of Democratic Members of the House and White House Officials to discuss health care reform.
  • The U.S. House met at 9:00 a.m. for legislative business.  Debated and voted in favor of emergency legislation to re-direct $2 billion from Recovery funds to the Consumer Allowance Rebate System (CARS), also known as Clash for Clunkers.  Debated and voted on H.R. 3269- Corporate and Financial Institution Fairness Act to give shareholders a bigger say over what corporate executives are paid by giving them an advisory vote on executive compensation plans.
  • Interview with Macomb Daily on health care reform.
  • Said good bye and thank you to summer interns and trade staff heading off to law school.
  • Spoke with National Public Radio, Bloomberg TV, Fox Business, WJR, MSNBC, CBS radio about the importance of continuing the momentum of the Cash for Clunkers program to the national economy.
