Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks upon learning the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund could be exhausted by as soon as 2017.
“Today’s report provided some disappointing news, however, it comes as no surprise. For some time, we have known that the state of our economy and the skyrocketing costs of health care are unsustainable. This report provided a dose of reality. The best way I see to fix Medicare is to fix the entire system. We cannot ensure a strong and sustainable Medicare program unless we reduce spending and pass comprehensive health care reform legislation this year. Furthermore, we won’t be able to reduce costs until we finally provide quality and affordable health insurance for every single American. I want to applaud President Obama’s call for action on to reform Medicare and the entire health care system. We must act now. If we don’t, both the human and financial costs to our nation will be unsustainable.”
