Dingell Introduces Food Safety Bill
E&C Health Subcommittee scheduled to take up the bill tomorrow

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) has introduced H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. The bill differs from the discussion draft considered during a legislative hearing by the Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health last week and H.R. 759, the Food and Drug Administration Globalization Act of 2009, in that it addresses only food safety.  Both the discussion draft and H.R. 759 contained certain provisions that related to drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics.  Congressman Dingell made the following remarks about the bill:

“It is clear that addressing our broken system of inspecting our food and ensuring its safety is a top priority.  The Committee and many of my Congressional colleagues have put quite a bit of work into this bill that will address the ongoing food safety crisis.  We have also reached out to consumer groups, industry and to our Republicans colleagues to make this the best bill it can be, and my door remains open.  But make no mistake; we are committed to giving the Food and Drug Administration the resources it needs to restore Americans confidence in the safety of the food on our store shelves.”

The Subcommittee on Health will consider H.R. 2749 in open markup session tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 Rayburn House Office Building.   A copy of the bill and a summary are attached.
