| Dingell Marks Beginning of CARS Program |
|
Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) praised National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for getting the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) program, commonly referred to as Cash for Clunkers, up and running today. Congress passed the law creating the CARS program in June. As the start of the business day, car shoppers could begin receiving government vouchers for up to $4,500 when trading in an older model car for newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Congressman made the following remarks:
“I want to commend NHTSA for its fast action on implementing the CARS program. I think once people get into the showrooms, they’ll be impressed with fuel-efficient vehicles on the floor. I also want to applaud the automakers matching the program. I am told the initial response has been tremendously strong. To me, this indicates the measures taken by Congress and the Obama Administration will get our economy moving again.”
