Dingell on Food Safety Electronic Registry
Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced plans to launch an electronic food registry for companies to quickly report potential food-borne illnesses to the federal government.
“I commend FDA for the steps they are taking to protect Americans from tainted food products. The launch of the reportable food registry will ensure FDA receives up to date information on potential food safety problems before they spread. It will help ease the angst felt by American consumers when they sit down at the dinner table each day. While an important first step, there is much more that can and must be done to fully ensure the safety of the nation’s food supply. In July, the House passed sweeping food safety legislation, which I sponsored, that will assure FDA has the resources and the authorities needed to ensure the safety of an increasing global and complex food supply. The legislation enjoys strong bipartisan support in the Congress, and the support of food safety advocates and industry. I urge swift action in the Senate. The longer we wait to act, the more Americans are placed at risk.”
