Dingell Statement on Termination of EDS Permits in Romulus

Washington, DC - Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments today after the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 notified Environmental Disposal Systems (EDS) that it intends to terminate federal permits allowing the injection of hazardous waste into two underground disposal wells at a facility in Romulus.

“This is good news. EDS did not keep its promises to the people of Romulus and did not act in good faith. It is unfortunate that the people there have suffered a double blow – from the leak discovered by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the loss of an economic opportunity. The EPA’s quick action will allow Romulus to move on from this sorry episode. We will work with the people of Romulus so that another partner can work on a new business venture, instead of the disposal of hazardous liquid waste.”
