Dingell Statement on Proposed Fine for EDS

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments today after the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today issued an administrative order to Birmingham, MI based company Environmental Disposal Systems Inc. (EDS) for numerous violations at its hazardous waste disposal facility in Romulus. EDS operated two hazardous waste disposal wells.

“The EPA has done its due diligence by serving EDS with a much deserved fine. This company made many promises when it moved into Romulus and it has kept none of them. I expect the EPA to continue to exercise careful oversight over this facility and I hope that others will learn from this lesson.”

The administrative order proposes that a penalty of $73,992 be assessed against EDS for the alleged violations. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality ordered the facility shut down in November 2006.
