Skelton Pays Tribute to Missouri’s Hunters and Anglers on National Hunting and Fishing Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Ike Skelton (D-MO) pays tribute to and urges Missourians to recognize Show-Me State hunters and fishermen on National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is Saturday, September 26, 2009.  As set forth by presidential proclamation, this important day recognizes the contributions of hunters and fishermen to the American economy and to our way of life, and it reminds people to participate in these valuable activities.

“As an Eagle Scout, I have appreciated the outdoors all of my life.  And, in Congress, I have been a strong supporter of legislation to promote outdoor heritage and to protect our constitutional right to bear arms.  Today, as America marks National Hunting and Fishing Day, I pay tribute to Missouri’s hunters and anglers.

“Hunting and fishing are very important to our way of life in rural Missouri and to the state’s economy.  These activities produce jobs and are particularly important to the rural communities I represent in the Fourth District.

“Promoting hunting and fishing is a good thing for rural Missouri.  It encourages families to spend time together and allows them an opportunity to take stock in the beauty of Missouri’s beautiful countryside.

“Over 100 years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt called for the first laws encouraging hunting and fishing throughout our country.  Taking the time to recognize National Hunting and Fishing Day in 2009 will preserve the same ideals set forth by President Roosevelt and allow Americans the time to reflect upon the benefits of hunting and fishing to Missouri and to our country,” said Skelton.
