WASHINGTON, D.C. – Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, today issued the following statement in response to the decision by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) to reject exclusion for all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles from the lead content limits found in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The CPSC instead decided to impose a year-long stay of enforcement of the newly restrictive toy safety regulations. Rehberg, who has introduced legislation in the House to solve this problem legislatively, sent a letter to the CPSC urging a permanent exemption for off highway vehicles from the overreaching lead regulation.
“It’s aggravating that this ruling first acknowledges the overreaching nature of the lead regulation for youth ATVs and motorcycles and then refuses to provide riders, retailers and suppliers with a permanent solution. It’s evident that this problem will require a Congressional solution, and I’m encouraged by the fact that my bill is picking up increased support in the House. We’re going to keep working on this thing until we get it fixed.”
