FOR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS Funds to Provide Emergency Rescue Equipment, Training |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
today called on House Appropriations Interior Subcommittee Chairman Ralf
Regula (R-OH) to include assistance in Congress’ emergency supplemental
budget for volunteer fire departments in counties declared Presidential
disaster areas as a result of Hurricane Floyd. The funding would
provide rural fire departments with emergency equipment and rescue training
to better protect their communities and enable them to respond during times
of natural disaster. President Clinton did not request similar funding
in his supplemental proposal.
“Hurricane Floyd taught us a lesson,” Jones said. “Our rural fire departments are the first line of defense in coping with fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other emergencies in rural communities; yet they were caught off guard by the size of the storm and the extent of its flooding. This funding would allow departments to improve the training and safety of their members so that they may help their communities when they need it the most.” When Hurricane Floyd hit, many of the rural fire departments in Eastern
North Carolina did not have the necessary training or equipment to perform
floodwater rescues. Some firefighters were unable to even make it
to the stations when flooding divided many communities. Still others
experienced faulty equipment or had their facilities wash away in flood
waters.
