TO HISTORIC TOBACCO DECISION |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC),
whose Eastern North Carolina district produces more flue-cured tobacco
than any district in the nation, today issued the following comments in
response to the Supreme Court’s ruling that the government lacks the authority
to regulate tobacco:
“This is a victory for all freedom-loving Americans. Today, the Clinton-Gore Administration’s fanatical effort to regulate tobacco products failed. While the President has dedicated most of his two terms in office to bringing down our nation’s tobacco farmers and their families, his efforts have proven futile. “I applaud the Supreme Court for their thoughtful and clear decision. Tobacco farmers grow a legal crop. The federal government has no business mandating how it is grown. I have long said that I wish President Clinton and Vice President Gore would dedicate the same amount of energy to ridding this country of illegal drugs that they spend trying to defeat our nation’s tobacco farmers.” |
