Stamp to Celebrate Unique History, Heritage of North Carolina |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
recently submitted a proposal to honor the Shackleford Banks wild horses
with a commemorative U.S. postage stamp.
“The history behind these beautiful horses is as important to Eastern North Carolina as it is to the entire nation,” Jones said. “By celebrating their special heritage with a postal stamp, we can capture the immortality of one of North Carolina’s treasures for centuries to come.” In a March 22 letter to the Postmaster General, Congressman Jones wrote, “On North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and in the small villages and towns on the coastal mainland, the oral histories and traditions that have been handed down generation after generation have become woven with stories of the wild horses that have lived on the barrier islands for centuries. They are the Outer Banks wild horses. Please join me in celebrating the Shackleford Horses with a Commemorative Stamp.” Each year, the U.S. Postal Service considers thousands of submissions for commemorative stamps. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee evaluates the proposals to determine whether they have broad national interest and are consistent with public opinion. On behalf of the Postmaster General, the Committee selects between 25 to 30 new subjects for recommendation every year. To participate in Congressman Jones’ effort to commemorate the Shackleford Banks wild horses, individuals can write letters to the Postmaster General in support of the proposal. All letters will be forwarded to the committee for consideration. Letters can be directed to: Mr. William J. Henderson
