FOR HURRICANE FLOYD RECOVERY EFFORTS Money for Farmers, Defense, Floodwater Rescue Training |

| Washington, D.C. — By a vote of 263 - 146, the U.S.
House of Representatives today passed its Fiscal Year 2000 Emergency Supplemental
Appropriations bill, H.R. 3908, which includes more than $300 million in
Hurricane Floyd assistance for North Carolina. Congressman Walter
B. Jones (R-NC), whose Eastern North Carolina district was devastated by
flooding, secured funding in the bill to help address unmet needs in the
areas of agriculture and defense.
“Today brings us one step closer to a full recovery,” Jones said. “I am pleased with the additional hurricane assistance that we were able to get in the House version and I urge Senator Helms and Senator Edwards to fight as hard as we did to protect it on the Senate side. Our Eastern North Carolina families are depending on it.” H.R. 3908 would provide $2.2 billion in disaster assistance for families and businesses affected by Hurricanes Floyd, Dennis, and Irene. North Carolina will receive over $300 million, including money Congressman Jones secured to provide emergency equipment and floodwater rescue training for rural fire departments in Eastern North Carolina. “The focus of our attention has been on repairing and rebuilding what was damaged in the storm. It is also important that we begin to prepare our communities for the reality of another hurricane season. When natural disasters hit, our rural fire departments provide the first line of defense. Unfortunately, when Hurricane Floyd hit last year, our volunteer firefighters did not have the training or the equipment to perform floodwater rescues. This funding will help ensure that one of our greatest emergency resources is prepared to assist our communities should natural disaster strike again,” Jones said. The Supplemental Appropriations bill includes the following hurricane
recovery assistance for North Carolina:
The Senate is scheduled to consider H.R. 3908 in the next few weeks. |
