Better Enforcement of Laws, Stricter Penalties for Gun Criminals |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
today cast his vote in favor of “Project Exile: The Safe Streets and Neighborhoods
Act of 2000” (H.R. 4051), which would help to reduce crime by enforcing
existing gun control laws and by increasing the penalties for committing
crimes involving guns.
“Project Exile is already producing significant results in our neighboring state of Virginia,” Jones said. “The program was implemented just three years ago in Richmond, and already crimes involving guns have dropped by 65 percent. These are the results that our neighborhoods and our communities are calling for, not new laws.” H.R. 4051 would provide for consistent, aggressive enforcement of gun control laws and increase penalties for crimes committed with a gun. The bill would also provide incentives for states to enact mandatory minimum sentences for firearm offenses. “When the Clinton Administration was called on to react to school shootings across the country, it called for more gun control laws,” Jones said. “Today, there are thousands of gun control laws on the books that are in place to protect law-abiding citizens and to penalize those who commit crimes with guns. But until the Administration decides to enforce current laws, we are not likely to see a real decline in gun violence.” H.R. 4051 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 358 – 60. |
