TO CLEAN UP NORTH CAROLINA’S STREAMS Legislation Critical as Hurricane Season Progresses |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC),
Member of the House Committee on Resources, today introduced legislation
he crafted to provide for the clean up and maintenance of our nation’s
waterways following major disasters like Hurricane Floyd.
Currently, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is responsible
for management of the federal “snag and drag” program to clear our nation’s
streams and waterways. Following growing concern from local communities
about ineffective management of the program, Rep. Jones introduced H.R.
4752 to help rectify the situation.
“This bill is critical as we head into another potentially devastating hurricane season. When our streams and waterways become clogged with debris, flooding can cause even greater damage to our towns and communities. This bill will help alleviate these problems should North Carolina sustain another hurricane this year,” Jones said. |
