REP. WALTER JONES INTRODUCES BILL
TO CLEAN UP NORTH CAROLINA’S STREAMS
Legislation Critical as Hurricane Season Progresses

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC), Member of the House Committee on Resources, today introduced legislation he crafted to provide for the clean up and maintenance of our nation’s waterways following major disasters like Hurricane Floyd.

Currently, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is responsible for management of the federal “snag and drag” program to clear our nation’s streams and waterways. Following growing concern from local communities about ineffective management of the program, Rep. Jones introduced H.R. 4752 to help rectify the situation.
Rep. Jones’ bill would authorize the Army Corps of Engineers to remove accumulated snags and debris, as well as to protect, clear and straighten channels in our nation’s navigable waters.

“Our Eastern North Carolina streams have not been cleaned up for years because the federal program is inefficient,” Jones said. “While this has been a problem for some time, local citizens became increasingly concerned after Hurricane Floyd aggravated the situation. In response to their concerns, I introduced this bill to improve the program and ensure the proper maintenance of our waterways.”

“This bill is critical as we head into another potentially devastating hurricane season.  When our streams and waterways become clogged with debris, flooding can cause even greater damage to our towns and communities.  This bill will help alleviate these problems should North Carolina sustain another hurricane this year,” Jones said.
