REP. JONES WORKS TO IMPROVE SAFETY STANDARDS, FEDERAL REGULATIONS FOR MANUFACTURED HOMES
Bill Includes Provision to Revitalize Low Income Communities

Washington, D.C. — By an overwhelming vote of 417 – 8, the U.S. House of Representatives today passed H.R 1776, the American Homeownership and Economic Opportunity Act, which would make significant improvements in the quality, safety, and affordability of manufactured homes.

“Many of our Eastern North Carolina families live in manufactured housing,” Jones said.  “In fact, manufactured homes are becoming affordable options for millions of families across the country.  This bill would make significant improvements in the safety standards and the enforcement of federal regulations so that more families can achieve the American dream of owning their own home.”

H.R. 1776 would create a committee of consumers, industry experts, and government officials to advise the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on safety standards and regulation enforcement.

“For many of us, buying a home is the greatest financial investment we will make in our lifetime.  This bill would ensure that all families have increased opportunities to invest in their future, regardless of income level,” Jones said.

H.R. 1776 also includes a provision that would allow HUD to transfer unoccupied and substandard housing to local governments and community development corporations to revitalize lower income communities.
