HOUSE MARKS FINAL PASSAGE
OF DEFENSE DEPARTMENT FUNDING BILL
Rep. Jones Secures Important Upgrades, Improvements for Local Bases

Washington, D.C. — By a vote of 367 - 58, the U.S. House of Representatives today voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2001 spending plan for the Department of Defense, which includes a 3.7 percent military pay increase and an additional $1 billion in military health care over last year’s level. Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-NC), a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, successfully fought to include a number of provisions in the bill to provide resources for area bases and establish an apprentice training program at Cherry Point.

“Today’s vote should be considered a win for our Eastern North Carolina bases,” Jones said. “This bill will provide for the training and equipment that is necessary to maintain our military’s superpower status, as well as provide a well-deserved pay increase and needed health care improvements for our military families.  I urge the President to sign this important spending bill when it reaches his desk.”

H.R. 4576 provides $288 billion to fund the United States Department of Defense.  The bill includes critical funding to provide the resources our men and women in uniform need to carry out their important missions and improve their overall military quality of life.  H.R. 4576 adds $329 million over the budget request for Defense medical research, including $175 million for breast cancer research and $100 million for prostrate cancer research.

In addition, Rep. Walter Jones helped secure:

  • $262 million for AV-8B Harrier Engine Remanufacture Program, which will largely be completed by NADEP Cherry Point
  • $144 million in upgrades and research and development for AV-8B squadrons, some of which are located at Cherry Point
  • $4 million for Navy Apprenticeship Program, $1 million of which will fund an apprentice program at NADEP Cherry Point
  • $2.5 million for a computer simulation pilot program to benefit Cherry Point
  • $1.1 billion for 16 V-22 tiltrotor aircraft, several of which will likely be stationed at New River MCAS
  • $231 million for 3 KC-130J aircraft, several of which will likely be stationed at Cherry Point MCAS
  • Over $70 million for Bradley Fighter Vehicle Upgrades for the NC National Guard
  • $68 million for Research and Development for Air Force F-15E squadrons, some of which are stationed at Seymour Johnson
The conference report to H.R. 4576 has been referred to the Senate for final consideration.
