OF DEFENSE DEPARTMENT FUNDING BILL Rep. Jones Secures Important Upgrades, Improvements for Local Bases |

| Washington, D.C. — By a vote of 367 - 58, the U.S.
House of Representatives today voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2001 spending
plan for the Department of Defense, which includes a 3.7 percent military
pay increase and an additional $1 billion in military health care over
last year’s level. Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-NC), a Member of the House Armed
Services Committee, successfully fought to include a number of provisions
in the bill to provide resources for area bases and establish an apprentice
training program at Cherry Point.
“Today’s vote should be considered a win for our Eastern North Carolina bases,” Jones said. “This bill will provide for the training and equipment that is necessary to maintain our military’s superpower status, as well as provide a well-deserved pay increase and needed health care improvements for our military families. I urge the President to sign this important spending bill when it reaches his desk.” H.R. 4576 provides $288 billion to fund the United States Department of Defense. The bill includes critical funding to provide the resources our men and women in uniform need to carry out their important missions and improve their overall military quality of life. H.R. 4576 adds $329 million over the budget request for Defense medical research, including $175 million for breast cancer research and $100 million for prostrate cancer research. In addition, Rep.
