| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
is encouraging members of the Armed Forces who served the United States
during the Cold War era to apply for a certificate of recognition for their
brave service in defense of freedom.
The Fiscal Year 1998 Defense Authorization Act approved awarding Cold War Recognition Certificates to all members of the Armed Forces and qualified civilian federal government personnel who faithfully and honorably served the United States at any time during the Cold War era, from Sept. 2, 1945 through Dec. 26, 1991. National Guard and Reservists are eligible. The certificate may be awarded posthumously to those whose relatives apply on their behalf. There is no charge to receive the certificate. To receive a Cold War Recognition Certificate, apply online at
http://coldwar.army.mil
Individuals who request a certificate are asked to provide documents for proof of service and certify that their character of service was honorable. Documents for proof of service may include any official government or military document with recipient’s name, Social Security Number/Military Service Number/Foreign Service Number and date of service. The program is scheduled to run for 10 years and recipients will have up to one year after requesting a certificate to supply the supporting documentation.
