CONGRESSMAN JONES RECOGNIZES CONTRIBUTIONS OF U.S. COAST GUARD ON 210th ANNIVERSARY
Jones-Backed Bill Honors Coasties Vital Role

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously this week to pass legislation to commend the effectiveness of the United States Coast Guard in protecting the public, the environment, and U.S. economic and national security interests in honor of the 210th anniversary of its establishment.  Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC) is a co-sponsor of the legislation.

“The United States Coast Guard serves a critical role in protecting the defense interests of the United States, while promoting maritime safety and security,” Jones said before the vote.  “As a representative of a district that is home to numerous Coast Guard facilities, I have witnessed firsthand the vital role this important branch of the Armed Forces can play when our local communities are in need.”

H.Con.Res.372 recognizes the historic significance of the establishment of the Coast Guard and the need to ensure the Coast Guard is prepared and ready to meet the demands of the 21st century.  The resolution also commends the men and women serving in the Coast Guard who risk their lives to save others in danger at sea, enforce the Nation’s treaties and other laws, protect the marine environment, and support diplomatic and national defense interests of the United States worldwide.

“Last year, Hurricane Floyd hit the East Coast and caused devastating flooding in North Carolina and neighboring states. All branches of the military, especially the United States Coast Guard, worked tirelessly to rescue residents threatened by the flooding. The dedication of our United States Coast Guard to the state and the nation is second-to-none. Time and again, their efforts have been critical in saving and protecting human life,” Jones said.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that our United States Coast Guard is always able to live up to their motto – Semper Paratus – Always Ready,” Jones said.
