Buxton Clinic to Continue Service through July, 2001 |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
announced today that he received assurance from the United States Coast
Guard that the health care clinic in Buxton will continue to assist military
retirees according to its present system of care through July 30, 2001.
“I know this announcement comes as a welcome relief to many military retirees who had expressed valid concerns about the future of their health care,” Jones said. “This extension of care will allow retirees and their families time to learn more about their health care options and decide what program will best serve their individual needs.” The Buxton clinic currently serves all military retirees, regardless of age and whether or not retirees currently subscribe to TRICARE Prime. In most other parts of the country, only military retirees under the age of 65 and who have paid to be part of TRICARE Prime can utilize base medical facilities. Many military retirees over the age of 65 who are no longer able to participate in the military health care system are forced to rely on Medicare or private insurance. Congress is currently examining several options in the FY01 Defense Authorization Bill to restore health care access for Medicare-eligible military retirees. The Coast Guard decided to extend care through next summer at
the Buxton clinic while it studies the feasibility of switching to TRICARE
Prime, the military managed care plan. If the Coast Guard decides to make
this change, there will be a lengthy period in which retirees will be educated
as to their options and given a chance to enroll in the TRICARE Prime program.
