‘Know Your Caller Act’ Passes House |
|
| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter Jones (R-NC)
joined his House Colleagues today to pass the “Know Your Caller Act” (H.R.
3100) to help North Carolina consumers monitor unsolicited phone calls.
The bill would ban telemarketers from evading caller ID services.
“With Americans working longer hours and facing greater time constraints, it is important that our family dinners and free time at home not be interrupted by uninvited calls from telemarketers,” Rep. Jones said. “This bill will offer consumers assurance that telemarketers can no longer interfere with or avoid caller ID.” The “Know Your Caller Act” amends the Communications Act of 1934 to prohibit any person making a telephone solicitation to circumvent a caller identification service. Soliciting callers would no longer be able to withhold identifying information about the call to the recipient or residence. The bill directs the Federal Communications Commission to enforce these laws. After debate, the legislation was passed unanimously in the House of
Representatives.
