| Washington, D.C. — Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-NC) announced
today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the North
Carolina Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) have granted Beaufort
County $1.4 million to elevate 33 residential properties damaged by flooding
associated with Hurricanes Fran and Bonnie.
“I have pledged to do everything in my power to assist the victims of the floods and to ensure that the we can prevent further damage to homes in the future,” Rep. Jones said. “I am pleased to say that FEMA and the North Carolina Hazard Mitigation Grant Program have worked to provide Beaufort County with additional funds to help to raise victims’ homes out of harms way.” FEMA project funding contributions total 75% or $1.025,957. The remaining $341,986 of the funding will be made by the State of North Carolina. HMGP grants are directed to state and local governments to bring about actions that will work toward long-term hazard mitigation. The goal of the program is to protect lives, property, and possessions in the event of a natural disaster. It gives some residents the option of moving permanently to unthreatened territory. Beaufort County is a participant in good standing in the National
Flood Insurance Program which qualifies them for these acquisition grants.
