Rep. Jones Votes for Legislation to Renew Older Americans Act

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) announced that the U.S. House of Representatives voted today for the renewal of the Older Americans Act.  H.R. 782, a bill targeted at providing needed assistance to millions of senior citizens, passed by a 405 to 2 vote.

“This bipartisan legislation benefits all older Americans,” Rep Jones said.  “The Older Americans Act has played a key role in providing seniors with access to vital programs and services so that they can remain in their homes and lead long, healthy, and active lives. It is important that we continue to work towards protecting the rights of our seniors, and by passing this bill we have reiterated our commitment to our nation’s elderly.”

H.R. 782 strengthens and extends existing programs under the Older Americans Act that expired in 1995, and protects key programs such as nutrition services, elder abuse prevention, and research on disease prevention. Today’s legislation continues these programs and approves funding for additional programs such as community and at home-delivered meals, and supportive senior centers.  The Act also targets resources to the most needy senior citizens.

In addition, the legislation enhances the ability of seniors to obtain employment by reforming the Senior Community Service Employment Program. It requires that providers meet performance standards, and that they are held accountable before receiving additional federal money in the future. The bill also requires providers and states to work together to ensure the equitable distribution of employment positions within the state. Finally, the legislation focuses on the unique needs of senior citizens in rural areas and distributes more money to help families of seniors with long-term care needs.

“This program benefits many senior citizens groups and organization in Eastern North Carolina, one of which is the Green Thumb Program,” Jones said. “I appreciate the many efforts of these groups in helping to bring recognition to the importance of this program and I am pleased that the legislation passed with such strong support today.”
