HOUSE PASSES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SPENDING BILL
Jones Announces Funding for Procurement and Upgrades at Area Bases

Washington, D.C. — By a vote of 379 – 45, the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday passed the Fiscal Year 2000 Department of Defense spending bill (H R 2561), which includes funding for programs and equipment for Eastern North Carolina bases.

“This bill will bring some important defense funding to Eastern North Carolina,” Jones said.  “When our military struggles with continued cuts to its defense budget, this measure directs needed funds to upgrade our aging equipment and assist our military families.”

The $266 billion defense budget provides for a 4.8 percent basic pay increase and a $243 million increase for the defense health program.

The bill also includes:

  •  $856.4 million to procure 11 V-22s ($60 million more than the President’s request)
  •  $111 million for upgrades to the EA-6B program (including part of a $60 appropriation    for high-fidelity EA-6B simulators at Cherry Point)
  •  $552 million for upgrades to the air refueling tankers for the Air Force
  •  Over $376 million for upgrades, research, and development for the Air Force F-15 fleet
