| Washington, D.C. — By a vote of 418 – 4, the U.S.
House of Representatives yesterday passed the Fiscal Year 2000 Military
Construction Appropriations bill, which appropriates spending for housing
and quality of life issues that affect our United States troops.
Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC) joined his colleagues in successfully
securing funding in the measure for programs at Marine Corps Base Camp
Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry
Point, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
“This funding addresses some of the growing needs our Armed Services
face on a daily basis,” Jones said. “Passage of this bill is a substantial
first step toward keeping our Eastern North Carolina men and women in uniform
prepared to meet the physical and mental challenges they face in their
important and demanding jobs.”
The bill includes:
-
$12.2 million for new construction at Seymour Johnson
-
$22 million for family housing at Cherry Point
-
$3.5 million for the Aircrew Water Survival Training Facility at Cherry
Point
-
$8.4 million for Maintenance and Operations Facility at Camp Lejeune
-
$4.2 million for the physical fitness center at Camp Lejeune
-
$8.75 million for road and utility construction at Camp Lejeune
-
$10.57 million for Tarawa Terrace II Elementary School at Camp Lejune
-
$580,000 for Aircraft Taxiway Addition at New River
-
$1.34 million for the family services center at New River
-
$3.6 million for the property control facility at New River
“Due to continued cuts in our national defense spending, the average United
States soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine is overworked and undercompensated.
This funding will go a long way to improve the education of our military
children, expand infrastructure, and ensure our troops are trained and
ready to fulfill their commitment to this great country,” Jones further
said. “I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate
to make sure this funding is retained in the final version of the bill.” |
