| Washington, D.C. — Congressman Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
today announced that he will urge the Department of Justice to punish the
suspects involved in the death of a Shackleford Banks pony to the fullest
extent of the law.
“In researching the law, I was pleased to find that the penalty for this crime is far greater than was originally thought,” Jones said. “The maximum penalty that can be imposed by a Federal judge for this Class B misdemeanor is six months in jail and a $5,000 fine. Previous press reports have indicated the federal offense is punishable only by a $300 fine.” Last month, one of the youngest Shackleford Banks foals was found dead, the result of what appears to be a failed theft attempt. Outraged by the tragedy, Jones joined the Foundation for Shackleford Banks Horses in offering a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for this crime. As a result, a number of businesses within the community have joined the effort to bring the involved individuals to justice. “The overwhelming sense of support from the citizens of Carteret County proves how special these horses are to our Eastern North Carolina heritage,” Jones said. “After all that we have worked for to see that these horses are protected, the people responsible for this terrible crime should be brought to justice and face the maximum penalty allowed by law.” Congressman Jones introduced the Shackleford Banks Wild Horse Protection Act (H.R. 765) in the 104th Congress, which the President signed into law last year. Under the bill, the National Park Service and the Foundation for Shackleford Horses work in alliance to maintain a herd of no less than 100 horses. Anyone with information that may be helpful in this process to please call their local law enforcement officials or the National Park Service at 252-738-2250. |
