Myrick Votes For China Trade Enforcement Bill
Comprehensive Measure will Toughen U.S. Trade Laws with China and Level the Playing Field for American Workers

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) today voted for, and the House passed, H.R. 3283, the United States Trade Rights Enforcement Act.  This bill contains concrete mechanisms to ensure China abides by its previous trade agreements.  The key provision in the bill would close an existing loophole in U.S. trade policy and would apply countervailing duties to punish China for their unfair trade practices.

“Our workers have been competing against illegally subsidized Chinese goods, and this bill will help level the playing field for American workers.  I have been working hard to make the Chinese comply with the agreements they signed with us.  I’m happy we could pass this bill and show China we are not going to allow them to steal our jobs,” said Rep. Myrick.

Rep. Myrick has been working on ending China’s unfair trade practices for many years.  She has spoken with the President, and has met with Administration officials, including the US Trade Representative, the Treasury Secretary, and the Secretary of Commerce, about China’s currency manipulation and how it is effecting the textile and manufacturing industries.  Myrick has also introduced legislation aimed at ending China’s currency manipulation.

This legislation will also establish a strong and external system to audit China to ensure that they are compiling with its trade obligations on intellectual property rights, market access and transparency. Furthermore, H.R. 3283 would:

-  Place Congress on record as strongly opposing attempts to use the WTO to water down domestic trade law protections.
-  Require the Treasury Department to define currency manipulation and clarify legal protections against China.
-  Increase funding for the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to create more trade cops to improve enforcement of existing trade laws.
-  Authorize funding for the International Trade Commission to provide help to expedite its dealings with all trade issues.
