Washington, D.C. – In response to reports about a web site that reveals personal data about New York City police officers, including the home addresses of undercover officers, Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, today announced plans to introduce legislation to make such revelations illegal.  The web site was first reported in today’s New York Daily news.

“There is a compelling state interest in ensuring that law enforcement is protected on and off the job,” Weiner said.  “The posting of personal information about cops can easily be used to intimidate the officers and perhaps endanger their families.  Free speech does not include the ability to terrorize officers.”

Under Weiner’s legislation, law enforcement agencies would be able to get court orders requiring internet service providers to take down any site that contains sensitive personal data that could endanger the life of a police officer.

Weiner also called on internet services to take immediate steps as well.

“I would hope that any internet company would see the danger in allowing a site like this to stay active”,  Weiner said.  “They may have the right to post it, but they should accept the responsibility not to.”
