RANGEL CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING
OF GM AUTO MALL IN NORTHERN MANHATTAN

Two New Car Dealerships bring jobs and investment into East Harlem

NEW YORK - Congressman Charles Rangel happily joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg and General Motors (GM) Corporation Chairman & CEO Rick Wagoner in commemorating the grand opening of the GM Auto Mall (2485 Second Avenue) on June 2.

"This project is another example of the ongoing economic revitalization of East Harlem," said Rangel of the 300-square foot complex located between Second and Third Avenues on 127th Street. "General Motors has joined a chorus of smart companies that have chosen Harlem as their destination of choice for their consumer products."

The multi-level facility houses two of the first auto dealerships in Harlem in more than 40 years and the only ones north of 57th Street in Manhattan. Both the Potamkin Cadillac-Hummer of Harlem and the Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem are expected to bring close to 200 new jobs and more than $60 Million in private investment. The complex is also scheduled to house a school that will train local residents for high paying jobs in the automotive field.

Officials also used the occasion to announce a partnership between GM, Safe Kids Worldwide and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) that will provide free child safety seats and inspections for Harlem families.

All these developments, said the veteran Congressman, were key to ensuring a bright future for the neighborhood.

"I applaud General Motors for its commitment to minority dealers and for working with the local communities to create economic opportunity," said Rangel. "The only thing more important than economic opportunities for our working families is the safety of our children."
