RANGEL LAMENTS THE PASSING OF OSSIE DAVIS
Statement by Hon. Charles Rangel

WASHINGTON, February 4, 2005 -- I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a dear friend, Ossie Davis an eminent African-American actor, playwright, producer, screenwriter and director who played a leading role in advancing the nation’s Civil Rights Movement.

A gifted actor, Ossie Davis showed his versatile talents in a bevy of roles and memorable performances. His death has left a huge vacuum in not only the world’s theatre industry but also hearts and minds of all Americans that would be difficult to fill.

Davis was a friend, devoted husband and admired by all with whom he came in contact. Truly, a trailblazer he also played a vital role in the progression of the arts in our country.

I am personally indebted to Ossie for his many contributions to my own Harlem community, including his service as chairman emeritus of the Board of the Apollo Theatre Foundation.

Without his efforts, there is no question that our nation would be less committed to the great moral challenges of our lifetime. The African-American community, as well as the entire country owes him a debt of gratitude.

Davis’ enormous achievements immeasurably affected the livelihood of African-American artists and the African-American community as a whole. Perhaps he would be best remembered for helping to knock down the exclusionary barriers placed upon minority artists across the nation.

He also helped to usher in a new age of American art and culture in which the contributions of African-American artists have been for the first time in our history recognized and appreciated.

In a time of limited opportunities for African-American actors, Ossie Davis sprung from the Harlem cultural scene before meeting his wife, Ruby Dee on Broadway and forging their legendary partnership. Together they appeared in more than 50 films.  My prayers go to his family.
