WASHINGTON, March 26, 2004 -- Congressman Charles Rangel is being floated on a list of potential candidates for vice president on the ticket headed by Senator John Kerry, according to a Washington news magazine.
"Supporters of [Senator John] Edwards and [Governor Howard] Dean aren't the only ones pushing for their heroes to be considered as Dick Cheney's replacement," Insight magazine reported in its March 29th issue. "Democratic insiders are raising several other names for a Kerry running mate, including...the witty and urbane Rep. Charles Rangel of New York."
Congressman Rangel, who was awaiting the birth of his second grandchild to his daughter, Alicia Haughton, chuckled at the notice, saying "at least I'm in good company."
Among those also mentioned in the article were: New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, former House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt of Missouri, former Senator Bob Kerry of Nebraska, General Wesley Clark of Arkansas, former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin of New York, and Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana.
The Congressman, a leading Kerry supporter, recently introduced the Massachusetts Senator to local and state elected officials in his Upper Manhattan district. |
