CONG. CHARLES RANGEL HONORED BY
UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

WASHINGTON, May 11, 2004 -- In recognition of his contributions in government and in the U.S. military, Congressman Charles Rangel has been presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

The Congressman was honored during the university's commencement exercises on May 8th at the MCI Center in Washington.

Addressing the Congressman during the convocation, UDC President Dr. William L. Pollard said, "You have devoted your entire adult life to the service of your country and have become one of the leading African-Americans elected to the United States government.

"You gave four years of your life to the defense of the United States in the U.S. Army, a period which included duty during the Korean Conflict.  You won the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, recognizing your distinguished service.

"You have consistently been an advocate for urban America and its concerns and have championed causes for people throughout the world.  You have always fought for your beliefs, and have well represented not only the people of your district, but the people of our nation," Dr. Pollard said.

Also honored at the University's 27th commencement were: Neurosurgeon, Dr. Benjamin Carson, Sr.; economist, Dr. Julianne Malveaux; and Mr. Frank Ross, a founder of the National Association of Black Accountants.
