Hinchey Statement on Resignation of
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer

Washington, DC - Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today released the following statement regarding the resignation of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.

"I am completely surprised and saddened by the events surrounding the resignation of Governor Spitzer.  My thoughts are with the governor's family members as they deal with what is most certainly a very difficult time for them.

"It's clear that Governor Spitzer's actions have created a situation in which he is unable to effectively lead the state and build consensus on the many important issues facing New York.  His resignation is appropriate and will enable our state to move forward.

"The most important thing for New York to do now is to move forward with our new governor and work with him to enact legislation that will improve the quality of life for all state residents.  I look forward to working closely with Governor-designate Paterson to further establish New York as a national and international leader in solar energy research and development, to strengthen our state's economy, to protect and enhance our precious natural and historical sites, and to accomplish a wide array of other important goals."
