Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) applauded action that will impose tariffs on tires imported from China. “This action clearly demonstrates that this nation is going to stand up for fair trade and American working families," said Congressman Higgins. "This is an important step in protecting our economy and local jobs, including the more than 1,100 employed at Western New York's Dunlop plant." The action by President Obama came late last week following the recommendation of the International Trade Commission, an independent agency tasked with investigating the effects of imports on domestic industries. On May 6, 2009 Congressman Higgins expressed his concerns about the issue in a letter to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke. Tire imports from China have increased 21 percent since 2004 leading to six American tire factory closings employing 7,000 workers. The tariff will take effect September 26. |
