Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) is reminding consumers that last week Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sebelius and Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack launched a new food safety consumer web site, www.foodsafety.gov, which will host resources and all of the latest news about food safety and recalls.
“Proper health care starts with nutrition and food safety,” said Congressman Higgins. “Through this web site, families and consumers now have a convenient one stop shop to address all of their food safety concerns. I encourage interested residents to sign up for the email list to stay informed and keep our community healthy and strong.”
A collaborated effort from the Food Safety Working Group this web site serves as a clearinghouse for all food-related information from all federal agencies—providing consumers with some peace of mind when they have inquiries and do not know where to properly locate an answer. The web site establishes better lines of communication to the public so that consumers stay informed and healthy. Information on the site ranges from details on recalls and inspection to proper cooking and storage times and temperatures for meat. About the Food Safety Working Group:
On March 14, 2009, President Barack Obama announced the creation of the Food Safety Working Group, chaired by Secretaries Sebelius and Vilsack, to determine "how we can upgrade our food safety laws for the 21st century; foster coordination throughout government; and ensure that we are not just designing laws that will keep the American people safe, but enforcing them."
