Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined Boys & Girls Club of Buffalo Chief Professional Officer Diane Rowe to announce the Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice totaling $567,416.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Buffalo has a wonderful track record of providing educational, character, and leadership-building programs as well as a safe, positive environment that puts our youth on the right path,” said Congressman Higgins. “This significant grant is an investment in our children and community’s future.”
“All New York children deserve the opportunity to achieve their full potential,” Senator Gillibrand said. “These federal dollars will give the Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo the resources they need to support more children in Western New York, and help put them on a path for a bright future.”
The local program will be targeted toward youth in the city of Buffalo at risk of academic failure, substance abuse, violence or gang activity and juvenile delinquency. Club staff, working with community partners and volunteer mentors will engage youth in mentoring programs focused on improving their performance in reading, math and science as a means to stimulate their curiosity in careers and motivate students to reduce risky behavior and pursue higher education.
Diane Rowe, Chief Professional Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo commented, "We so pleased to receive this grant that will allow us to continue our programs for at risk kids. It is so important to engage these children in programs that will help them succeed in school and provide a path to positive, hopeful futures."
Established in 1926, the Boys & Girls Club of Buffalo today serves 8,500 youth between the ages of 6-18. Of the youth visiting the 6 club houses and 10 satellite locations operated by the Boys & Girls Club in Buffalo and Erie County, 85% are classified as "at risk" of becoming involved in the juvenile justice system, exhibiting low self-esteem, and poor problem solving skills.
The funding was authorized through the Second Chance Act, which authorizes grants to provide employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, housing, family programming, mentoring, victims support, and other services to help at-risk adults and juveniles.
