Today the National Institutes for Health announced the launch of a research program to enhance newborn screening named in memory of Hunter Kelly. Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) issued the following statement in response:
“Jim and Jill Kelly have worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the important role newborn screening can play in treating and preventing genetic disorders and Hunter’s legacy will live on through this program. While Jim Kelly is routinely remembered in Western New York for his passes on the football field, his leadership pushing for passage of the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act is arguably his greatest victory - one that children and families will benefit from for generations to come. “
Background:
Congressman Brian Higgins was cosponsor of the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act, approved by the House of Representatives on April 8, 2008 and signed by the President on April 24, 2008.
The law facilitates the creation of comprehensive Federal guidelines on newborn screening, and assists States and providers to comply with the Federal guidelines. States have been conducting newborn screenings on genetic and congenital disorders for decades, but the rules are far from uniform. Modern technology makes it possible to detect up to than 40 conditions simultaneously. This law would bring state to a very high standard regarding newborn screening, providing significant public health benefits to parents and families on how to best care for their children.
