[Buffalo, NY] – On Monday, October 26, 2009, Mark P. Lazzara, CEO of WNY AmeriCorps, and special guest Congressman Brian Higgins, announced independent non-profit WNY AmeriCorps, one of the largest national service organizations in the nation, will be transforming the retail space of the former Shea’s Theater Building, 2188 Seneca St. Buffalo, NY, into the new headquarters of national service in Western New York. The transformation of the chosen space will take place over the next two to three months, with plans to transfer all operations from the former headquarters at 2001 Union Rd. by the first quarter of 2010. Since the beginnings of WNY AmeriCorps, the organization has expanded from a program containing eight at-risk youth members to an independent non-profit organization with over 600 members serving the community through poverty elimination, educational, and youth leadership development initiatives. “Every day the WNY AmeriCorps team is working behind the scenes to strengthen our neighborhoods while providing local young people with educational, leadership and hands-on skills that contribute to new opportunities and a better future for our youth and our community,” said Congressman Brian Higgins. “We are thrilled that WNY AmeriCorps’ future is right here in the City of Buffalo and grateful for their ongoing commitment to this region.” “This move represents the next chapter in the evolution of WNY AmeriCorps,” said Mark P. Lazzara, CEO of WNY AmeriCorps, “As we move into the metropolitan community that has been so supportive of our efforts, I’d like to take this chance to thank our community partners, dedicated members, and passionate staff that are the reason for our continued success in the community. It’s truly a proud day for WNY AmeriCorps.” WNY AmeriCorps creates opportunities for all individuals to serve, challenging citizens to turn their ideals into action and their passion into positive change. Through transformational service and civic responsibility, WNY AmeriCorps is designing a sustainable future for our nation’s communities. For more information, visit WNYAmeriCorps.org.
