Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that researchers at Cleveland Biolabs, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the University at Buffalo have been awarded $1,504,794 in grants made available through Recovery Act funding authorized for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
“Researchers here in Western New York are practicing top-notch breakthrough medical science and their good work is recognized through these grant awards,” said Congressman Higgins. “This funding is being used to develop tomorrow’s treatments and cures while supporting good paying jobs at facilities in our community.”
Under this award Cleveland Biolabs will receive $458,512, Roswell was awarded $300,451 for two initiatives and UB has secured a total of $745,831 for three projects.
In a letter sent to Congressional leaders on September 18, 2008 from Higgins and other members of Congress they stressed, “Increasing funding for the NIH this year would also provide a necessary kickstart to our country’s innovation industries, providing economic stimulus that lasts well into the future. Americans understand that more research opportunities into all sorts of diseases will lead to better treatment and cures for the maladies they face…and create America’s next generation of small, entrepreneurial biotechnology firms.”
This is one of several Recovery Act grants awarded to researchers on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus this year. Just last Friday the Congressman announced $568,066 for research at Roswell and UB.
The Recovery Act included $10.4 billion for the National Institutes of Health, including $8.2 billion for scientific research priorities.
