Congressman Higgins Announces $559,995 for Northwest Buffalo Community Health Care Center

Grant Received From Recovery Act to Address Health Care Facility Needs

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that Northwest Buffalo Community Health Care Center has been awarded $559,995 in a federal grant.  The funds were made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and authorized for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to address health care facility and equipment needs.

“Providing the best and most efficient health care starts with investing in health care facilities and equipment,” said Congressman Higgins.  “At a time when so many Americans go without healthcare due to the economy and high costs of health care, these Recovery Act funds will allow doctors to focus more on being doctors leading to better care for the Black Rock community and Buffalo residents.”

Opened in 1987, Northwest Buffalo Community Health Care Center operates as a Health Resources Services Administration-supported health center to serve those with limited financial resources and access to health care—regardless of ability to pay.  The center provides both emergency and preventive care making it a vital institution in maintaining the wellness of Buffalo.  This center and similar ones across the country help more than 17 million patients of whom about 40 percent are uninsured.

Over 1,500 other health center sites nationwide received grants through the Health Center ARRA Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for construction, repair and renovation of facilities.  Additionally, more than half of the centers will utilize the funds for new equipment and nearly 400 health centers will implement and develop the use of electronic health records.

The Health Center ARRA Capital Improvement Program provides $851.5 million for health care centers across the country including $53.2 million for 51 health center grantees in the state of New York.
