EMERGENCY SPACE BILL WOULD PROVIDE HUNGER RELIEF

- Following “Hunger Knows No Holiday Tour” in Hocking and Jackson Counties, Space Takes Action to Address Budget Shortfalls -

December 18, 2007

Washington, DC -- Following his participation in the Second Harvest Foodbank “Hunger Knows No Holiday Tour” in Hocking and Jackson Counties yesterday, Congressman Zack Space (OH-18) announced plans to introduce legislation to help alleviate the ongoing hunger crisis through funding to overcome budget shortfalls.  Because the 2007 Farm Bill, which contains a number of hunger relief programs, has not yet passed the Senate, it is necessary to provide emergency stopgap funding.  Senator Sherrod Brown introduced the Senate version of this legislation.

“I find it appalling that we are the wealthiest country on Earth, yet there are millions of people who go hungry every day,” said Space.  “Yesterday, I met families who sat for hours in the cold just to receive a meager allowance of food.  This is not the Great Depression, and there is no excuse for children to go to bed hungry.”

“Partisan bickering over the provisions of the Farm Bill should not delay funding to help parents provide food for their families.  I applaud Senator Brown’s efforts, and hopefully these bills will quickly make it through to provide the emergency funding necessary to keep these vital programs running,” Space continued.

This legislation would provide $40 million in emergency funds until the Farm Bill passes.

Congressman Space has represented Ohio’s 18th Congressional District since 2007, and he is working to restore integrity to the office, expand Ohio’s economy, and support renewable energy.
