WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman David Wu today sent a letter to Joseph T. Kelliher, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), calling on him to provide residents of Clatsop County with additional opportunities to ask questions about the liquefied natural gas (LNG) siting process. Clatsop County residents would be especially affected by the proposed Bradwood Landing terminal.
Text of Congressman Wu’s letter follows:
April 8, 2008
Joseph T. Kelliher Chairman Federal Energy Regulatory Commission 88 First St., NE Washington, DC 20426
Dear Chairman Kelliher:
I am writing to request that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) hold additional public hearings in Clatsop County, Oregon on the proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.
I firmly believe that it is vital FERC’s licensing process be transparent and open to the public. The proposed LNG facility at Bradwood Landing presents a choice between very different futures for the communities along the lower Columbia River. Members of the local community—indeed, all Oregonians—would benefit from a comprehensive understanding of what impact projects such as Bradwood Landing could have on Oregon.
FERC has heard concerns from Oregon's governor, Theodore R. Kulongoski, and four members of the Oregon congressional delegation regarding FERC's process for the approval of these facilities, the assessment of need for such facilities, and the lack of state and local influence over the siting of these facilities. I am disappointed with FERC’s response dated April 2, 2008.
Perhaps more importantly, residents of the lower Columbia River continue to believe FERC does not hear their concerns. Supporters and opponents of the LNG proposal alike feel that there is no venue in which to pose questions about the FERC siting review process.
FERC could help assuage such concerns by holding another public hearing in Clatsop County. Thank you for your immediate attention to this request.
Sincerely,
David Wu Member of Congress
