WU PRESSES FOR ANSWERS ON IRAQ “MONOFOCUS”

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman David Wu today released the following statement after questioning General David H. Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker at today’s Foreign Affairs Committee hearing:

“Our country currently has a monofocus on Iraq, which does not allow us adequate time and resources to appropriately engage diplomatically with other nations, or militarily to finish the job in Afghanistan.

“Today I asked General Petraeus to tell Congress how we will be able to identify ‘success’ in Iraq, so that we can turn our attention to the broader world.  The American people deserve to know the specific metrics defining the conditions that will, in his view, allow us to bring our troops back home.

“The general continued to repeat that war is ‘calculus, not arithmetic,’ and that he could not give me a clear response.  But even in calculus, you get an answer, and we weren’t getting straight answers today.

“I remain resolved to end the Iraq war as soon as possible.”
