WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman David Wu today reminded high school students in Oregon’s First Congressional District that they have two more weeks to enter the 2008 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery.

The Congressional Art Competition was first launched in 1982, and has grown into a nationwide contest involving more than 650,000 students each year.  Local competitions are coordinated by members of Congress to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talent of young people in their district.

Previous winning entries are featured on Congressman Wu’s Web site at: www.house.gov/wu/art_competition.shtml.

All high school students who are permanent residents of Oregon’s First Congressional District are eligible to enter the competition.  Entries from the First Congressional District will be judged by faculty from the Art Institute of Portland.

The winner will have his or her artwork hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building for one year.  In addition, the winning artist is eligible for a $1,000 scholarship toward his or her education at the Art Institute of Portland and three round-trip tickets to attend the June 25, 2008 ribbon-cutting ceremony and opening of the Artistic Discovery 2008 exhibition in Washington, DC.

The winner will also be recognized at an award ceremony at the Art Institute of Portland on May 1, 2008 at 5:30 p.m.—coinciding with Portland's First Thursday gallery walk celebration in the Pearl District.
